IUI Treatment in Bhopal – Dr. Purnima Tiwari
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a medical procedure, mainly used in fertility treatment. During the IUI treatment, specially prepared sperm is directly placed into a woman’s uterus. By doing this, interaction with antibodies and cervical mucus that block sperm from entering the uterus is avoided. In addition, the sperm with the greatest motility are selected before the sperm is introduced. With IUI, sperm are introduced during ovulation, when one or more eggs mature in the ovary. Hormonal stimulation of the woman may also be used. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis.
When Is Intrauterine Insemination Required?
There are a number of factors that can contribute to a couple’s ability to conceive. Intrauterine insemination is most often used in the following cases:
- Cervical factor infertility: The infertility is due to problems with the cervix. As the ovary releases an egg, it produces mucus in the cervix region. This mucus aids in the movement of sperm from the vagina to fallopian tubes, but a very thick one may hinder it. IUI can bypass the cervix and thereby increase chances of conceiving.
- Ovulatory factor infertility: Couples experiencing infertility due to ovulation troubles might be recommended to undergo IUI treatment. These troubles include absence of ovulation or less number of eggs.
- Infertility due to sperm allergy: Some women experience pain during sex as they are allergic to proteins present in semen resulting in burning sensation or swelling. These are some of the women who can find solace in IUI technique. To prepare sperm for IUI, doctors extract several proteins that cause allergic reactions. Hence, this method not only increases chances of conception but also prevents unpleasant symptoms associated with semen allergies.
- Unexplained Infertility: When a couple has been trying to conceive for a year or more without success, and medical tests find no specific cause for infertility, IUI can be considered. It's a common treatment option in such cases.
How Does IUI Work?
IUI involves several steps:
- Ovulation tracking: Doctors monitor ovulation to find the best time for insemination. They use ovulation prediction kits or ultrasound to do this.
- Sperm preparation: The male partner or a donor provides sperm. A washing process separates healthy moving sperm from the rest.
- Insemination: A doctor puts the prepared sperm into the woman's uterus with a thin tube. This happens 24-36 hours after ovulation.
- Fertilization: The sperm must meet the egg in the fallopian tube.
- Implantation: If the sperm fertilizes the egg, the embryo moves to the uterus. It then attaches to the uterine lining, which can lead to pregnancy.
